Design Tips for Kids’ Bathrooms

Too often, bathrooms get overlooked during the decorating process. Bathrooms are just as important a part of the house as any other room, though. They’re where we start and finish our day, and they can make a bold statement for guests who come to visit. What’s more, a newly revamped bathroom can add value to your home if you ever decide to sell. Remodeling the bathroom can be a fun family activity to work on together, and it only takes just a bit of time and money to create a whole new look for the room. Here are some tips on how to make the most out of your child’s space.

Choose Accents that Pop

Most kids want a room that’s bursting with color, and the bathroom is no different. You don’t have to paint over every surface, though. For a chic yet playful look, add in some bright and bold accents to liven up the room. These accents might be pictures on the walls, decorative candles on a shelf, or an arrangement of fluffy bath towels in an array of colors. This also makes it easier to compromise on a color palate with your kid. Even if they insist on mixing neon yellow and bright pink, you can find a way to make it work.

Pick out a Theme

Themed bathrooms are a fun way to coordinate decor and add a little bit of magic to the space. It’s essential that your child be central to the brainstorming process, though feel free to make suggestions if they’re having trouble settling on a single idea. You can deck the room out with dragons and princesses, take things under the sea with shells and starfish, or blast into outer space with planet mobiles and constellation stickers.

Kids Dinasour Step Stool.jpg

Keep Safety in Mind

The bathroom can be one of the most dangerous rooms in the house, especially for children. More than 43,000 kids every year in the U.S. sustain injuries in the bathtub. You can incorporate safety features for your kids into their bathroom decor scheme to help keep them safe when bathing, showering, and more. Colorful bath mats and shower pads help to prevent slipping on wet surfaces, while small stools with non-skid feet can make it easier to reach sinks and faucets.

A brand new bathroom can make things such as bath time and tooth brushing much more exciting for any kid. New colors, accents, and artwork can bring any dull space to life.

If you’re looking for a fun project that you can complete in a weekend, consider helping your child to redecorate their bathroom.

Essential Tips for Creating an Amazing Eclectic Bathroom

Essential Tips for Creating an Amazing Eclectic Bathroom

If you want to create a bathroom that isn’t just plain white and boring, then the eclectic style is perfect for you. Mixing different styles and periods will make your bathroom look truly unique, as you can adjust it to your own taste much easier, and it would allow you to add a personal touch as well. So, if you’re looking to create a stylish and one-of-a-kind bathroom that can fit all your needs, here are a couple of tips for creating a fantastic eclectic bathroom.

Plumber in Orland Park IL

Add Pops of Color

If you want your bathroom to stay neutrally colored, consider adding pops of color to make it more interesting. For instance, you can paint your cabinets, mirror frames, or door frames in bright orange or yellow, which would allow your bathroom to stay elegant, but it wouldn’t look too plain. It’s a simple but effective way to spice up your bathroom a bit.

Add Some Contrast

Instead of adding pops of color, you could also use contrasting colors in your bathroom. For instance, you could choose some darker finish for your wooden cabinets, which would go perfectly with white marble counters. Or, you could paint your whole bathroom in some darker color and install light-colored fixtures.

Mix the Materials

For a truly eclectic bathroom, don’t hesitate to mix the materials. For example, you can have ceramic tiles, but wooden cabinets. Or, you can introduce some natural-stone fixtures that would go well with porcelain tiles. Whichever materials you choose to mix, it is a great way to emphasize the eclectic appearance of your bathroom.

Choose the Right Tiles

Having the right kind of tiles can help you create the best eclectic vibe. Make sure they are of high quality, and don’t be afraid of picking some interesting patterns. This would also make your bathroom look less dull. Moreover, if you have a specific design or shape in mind, your tiles can also be customized. This would make your eclectic bathroom truly yours. Just make sure your tiles are never dirty; if you live in the Land Down Under, there are many professional tile cleaners in Sydney that can help you keep your tiles sparkling clean.

Add an Element of Surprise

For a really unique look, add an element of surprise to your bathroom. For example, you can paint one wall in a different color, build a small fireplace, or introduce an ornate gilded mirror. Additionally, if you happen to have a collection of figurines, you can place them on top of your counter, or you could hang some abstract painting on the wall. Moreover, in case you have one of those plastic lawn decorations, you could place one in your bathroom. Adding such small, unexpected details will make your bathroom look much less serious.

Enclose It

Another great idea for an electing bathroom is enclosing your shower. You can do it with large windows, mirrors, or wood. Enclosing it would emphasize the visual continuity and make your bath look larger than it really is. It could also add a nice contrast to the rest of your bathroom, and make it look a bit more trendy.

An eclectic bathroom is perfect for everybody who wants to have a unique and interesting bathroom that reflects their personality and shows their sense of style. So, make sure to choose the right tiles, think about the colors, enclose your bath for a more modern look, and don’t be afraid of mixing different materials. You can also add an element of surprise in order to make it more humorous, and your bathroom is bound to become your new favorite room in the house.

6 Eco-Friendly Tips To Green Up Your Bathroom

Rona Regan

6 Eco-Friendly Tips To Green Up Your Bathroom

A simple yet efficient solution to make your bathroom greener is replacing the old incandescent bulbs, and switching to an energy-saving option. Apart from consuming and wasting a great amount of energy, incandescent bulbs also emit carbon dioxide, which can pose a threat both to your health and the environment. Instead, you should replace them with light-emitting diodes (LEDs), which are healthier, more efficient and energy-saving. Although you might invest a bit more initially, LEDs can reduce your power consumption even up to 90%, significantly decreasing your energy bill.

A sustainable irrigation system

Opting for an alternative, green irrigation system can significantly reduce your water consumption and increase your savings in the long run. With a variety of technological advances, rainwater harvesting has gained popularity over the years, meeting both industrial and domestic needs. This type of irrigation system can provide you with enough water to meet your annual demand. Since this technology entails a water harvest tank and several levels of filtrations systems, it enables you to use the collected water for your everyday needs, form drinking and cooking, to bathing.

Water-saving fixtures

The next step towards greening up your bathroom is replacing your old fixtures, such as taps and showerheads, with water-efficient ones. There’s a variety of green options you can choose, from low-flow showerheads, to taps and showers with aerators, to motion sensor faucets. Some of them will simultaneously reduce your water and energy consumption. For example, by installing low-flow showerheads, you’re reducing the amount of water while showering and the amount of energy used to heat the water.

A low-flow toilet

Out of the entire water consumption in your home, toilets account for 27%, which is more than any other appliances, such as shower, washing machine or dishwasher. In addition, if you have a leaky toilet, you’re wasting your water on a daily basis. To reduce your water loss, you should install a low-flow toilet because your old one can use even up to seven gallons of water per flush. In addition, a low-flow toilet with dual flush provides you with two flushing options depending on your needs.

If you have a leaky tank, you should stop the leak as soon as possible because it’s a major source of water loss. To check whether your tank is leaking, pour a bit of food dye before you go to bed in the tank. In the morning, if there’s dye in the toilet, it means that your toilet needs a repair.

Green products

There are some small, but significant changes you can make to boost eco-friendliness of your bathroom. To truly capture the green spirit, you should switch to green products, including recycled toilet paper, green soap and bath products, towels made from organic cotton, etc. By switching to these products, you’ll lower your environmental footprint and protect your health and skin.

Cleaning products are among most dangerous ones that you can find in your household because they contain high levels of toxic chemicals that can endanger your health and the environment. Therefore, you should switch to green cleaning products, or make your own cleaning solutions that are safe, healthy and equally efficient.

Pipe maintenance

Your plumbing can also have a major impact on your overall water consumption, so you need to have your pipes properly maintained, repaired or replaced if needed. Proper and regular pipe maintenance is of the utmost importance if you want to prevent any leaks or water loss. You can also replace your pipes with eco-friendly plumbing solutions that can reduce your heat loss, by proper insulation. If you need any repairs or replacements, you need to contact a reliable plumber who will make sure that the job is done properly. Otherwise, you’ll spend a fortune on additional and unnecessary repairs.

With these simple yet efficient eco-friendly updates, you’ll green up your bathroom in no time. By doing so, you’ll both protect the environment and increase your savings.

How To Successfully Link An En Suite Bath And Bedroom

How to Successfully Link an En Suite Bath and Bedroom

If you are wondering how to make the optimal synergy of bathroom and bedroom, with corresponding colors and ambiance that will make that Feng Shui friend of yours very hard to get rid of, you have come to the right place.

In the following article, you will learn the dos and don’ts of en suite linking and how to turn your vision into reality.

Complementary, but Different

Use the technique of reversing the scheme of the en suite, creating a link between the bedroom and the bathroom. If you have light colors in your bedroom, go for darker tiles in the bathroom with lighter furniture to complement and connect the schemes of the two rooms. Conversely, dark hues in the bedroom correspond with lighter tiles and darker furniture in the bathroom.

Bare the Floor

A great way to add a sense of space to any room is by applying wall-hung fittings to it. Things like vanity units or more modern style designs with shapely legs that will allow you to still see the floor will work perfectly. In order to achieve perfect synergy, equip your bathroom only with furniture that compliments the pieces in your bedroom, by choosing similar finishes and materials.

Design a Smart Storage Solution

Do your best to declutter the space by devoting a bathroom wall to some storage solutions that will free up space and keep all of your essentials nicely packed, leaving the room looking tidy. Also, try implementing various design solutions to create a cozy feel, like displaying decorative items such as shelves, flowers, or figurines.

Use any additional space for storage. For instance, you can put your bathroom essentials in decorative boxes or storage ottomans. Instead of using those stylish shelves to stuff bathroom utensils, put books on them - this will create an intimate feeling and also entice you to catch up on your reading while taking a relaxing bath.

Make Both Rooms Look Bigger

Implementing small changes into the setting, quite literally, can make both rooms seem more spacious and comfortable. The same way you would choose the en suite furniture to match your bedroom furniture, consider making small adjustments to your bedroom as well. Try investing into some DIY shelves and additional storage solutions like decorative boxes, or hanging open nightstands and add a chest at the base of your bed.

Additionally, opting for a bed that perfectly fits your needs will not only accentuate the spaciousness of the room but it will also look amazing. Make sure to invest in a quality mattress that will work wonders for your sleep. And if you don’t have too much space in the sleeping segment and you’ll be the only person using it, deciding on a bed with spacious super single mattress could be a great way to create some additional space and sleep on a bed that perfectly fits your needs.

Combine Complementary Colors

Color coordination is very important if you want to make two rooms feel like two halves of a whole. En suites are often small but practical rooms designed to offer everything a big bathroom does, so in order to make it feel as spacious as possible, you need to introduce lots of light to it.

Try combining a neutral carpet from your bedroom with porcelain floor in the bathroom; also choose styles that are similar both in tone and color. A good, waterproof floor in the bathroom directly complements a soft, fuzzy carpet in the bedroom.

Choose the Right Finishes

Choosing the right finishes can be a bit tricky and if not done correctly, it can ruin the entire concept of the room. Try to use complementary, yet different upholstery, colors, tiles, fabrics and patterns in order to let the rooms speak their own story but give a feeling that they absolutely need each other. If you do the opposite, the rooms will look forced and distasteful.

Finally, details are the ones that can make or break your overall design. Use an accent color from your bedroom, and implement it in your bathroom through shelves, blinds and other accessories.

When you think about it, designing and successfully linking your bedroom with your en suite can be fun. By following these tips and tricks, you won’t go wrong.

How to Choose The Perfect Lighting for Your Bathroom

Rona Regan

How to Choose The Perfect Lighting for Your Bathroom

Bathrooms are usually overlooked when it comes to design. Details, like lighting, are probably the most neglected part. People tend to choose the least expensive option, or the one that’s the easiest to install. However, bathrooms are an important part of our daily routines. Therefore, choose your lighting solutions meticulously, and you will immediately notice a difference in the overall ambiance.

Main light source

The best light source for any room is always natural light. It isn’t an option for many, but try to have as much of it as possible. If there is no chance to introduce natural light to your bathroom, think about installing a nice chandelier which will make the room appear spacious and inviting. However, with all that water running around this can be a bit dangerous if not done properly. Therefore, make sure you place it at least 3 feet away from the tub. Also, add a dimmer to this solution as you might want to dim the light by about 20 percent during the day.

Task lights

It’s important to have proper lighting for mundane bathroom tasks (like applying makeup, flossing or shaving). Mirror and vanities are the best places to hide a couple of stronger (75 to 100 watt) light bulbs. Put one light on each side of the mirror at about face level. If you place it higher than, you might not like the results. Use LED lights because they are much easier to control and dim. Don’t forget to place a small light above your storage area as well – it might come in handy.

Bathtub and shower

Bathtubs can be a bit tricky to properly illuminate. Aside from the various technicalities you’ll need to consider, this area is very private so keep that in mind as well when choosing the best lighting option. Furthermore, putting fixtures too close to the tub can be pretty dangerous. Most people decide to usewet location downlights, but those who have big bathrooms may also install spotlights. Trim lights which are pretty bright and cast a large shadow are the best solution for open showers. Since these come in direct contact with water, you should maybe consider having an electrician 24 hours at your disposal

Light bulbs

When choosing the right light bulbs, your primary concern should be the way their light affects your skin tone. Also, you should consider the impact they have on the environment and the amount of electricity they consume. Halogen bulbs are definitely a smart choice, but they are a bit pricey. On the other hand, you won’t have to change them very often which means that you might even end up saving some money in the long run. Fluorescent light bulbs are a close second when it comes to tone, and they consume 10 times less energy than other bulbs. It’s also important to check if the new light bulbs fit the traditional fixtures.

A new ambiance

It’s important to note that by changing the lighting, you might feel the need to change some other things in your bathroom, as well. This change may expose a problem with your paint, or make the old paint feel inadequate. Also, by introducing a different light a room can seem more spacious, so you might want to add mirrors or a couple of other smaller decorative items.

Choosing the right lighting solution for your bathroom is much more art, than it is science. It’s good to have an overall vision of the atmosphere you wish to create, but unless you try a few ideas out, you won’t be sure which of them actually work.

Points To Ponder While Opting For House Renovation Plumbing

Points to Ponder While Opting for House Renovation Plumbing

House renovation can get more than scary if it is not done with thorough preparation and careful planning. All those DIY projects available online now a day may not give you expected results when done single-handedly. In the end, you will realize it would have been better if you had considered expert’s advice in the matter that is as big as house renovations. Bathroom, kitchen and living room are the most essential parts of your beautiful house that need special touch and personal care to achieve a dream-come-true design.

However, most of the time bathroom is often gets a blind eye from homeowners who tend to give much importance to enhancing the look and feel of living room. They are forgetting that house renovation plumbing is the job that eventually adds elegance and charisma to your house. Fixing up a bathroom, they don’t consider, is not just some makeover effort. A lot of thinking and practical feasibility go into creating the perfect shape of your bathroom especially if you are a first timer.

Here we have compiled some of the significant points of how to approach the idea of bathroom renovations that entail meticulous side of plumbing endeavors.

Plan for the long-term future

Budget and time are the most important aspects of any home renovation project. So before you set eyes on a specific bathroom design, you need to do your research in advance. To begin with, you need to know what exactly you want out of the entire project and determine what areas of your house need plumbing efforts.

Knowing what you want will help you avoid all the impractical ideas and keep overall cost of house renovation plumbing to an optimal level. Blueprints will come in handy to find out all about water flow system in your house. If things get complicated, you may ask a professional plumber to figure it out for you.

Bathroom features you desire

Some bathroom features are not suitable for homeowners living a unique lifestyle. For instance, you may need a bigger water heater if you have installed more accessories with multiple water outlets like a big soaking tub and multi-head shower.

Having people who use wheelchair to move around again generates special needs for you. You can increase the accessibility of bathroom for them and optimize it to their limited mobility. Tub not used for a long time can be removed to place a pleasant shower, creating more bathroom space.

Here comes the plumbing project

There are certain things that only strike your mind when the project of house renovation plumbing begins such as budget flexibility, labor cost, materials and scope of work expanding a little more than predicted.

To optimize your expenses on the plumbing project, you should reserve minimum 10% of your overall budget to meet unknown design implementations. Certain structural changes and creativity will eat a little more of your budget slice, which will not be regrettable considering the fact that renovation plumbing initiative is executed to last for 30-50 years.

How a licensed plumber is your fruitful resort

If your house hails from the classic era of 50’s or 60’s, you should better think of changing the old plumbing. Old pipes might have degraded or eroded, which increases the chance of subtle damages, blockages or water leaks.

No matter how knowledgeable you are with plumbing process and tools, you can’t still do what a licensed plumber can for your house. They can:

·       Save you a lot of money by performing precise techniques

·       Do more than just sealing, patching and drilling

·       Use their tools skillfully, giving you exact solution

·       Diagnose the problem efficiently with minimal disruption

·       Handle the whole plumbing with fast turnaround time

·       Recommend you modern house renovation plumbing ideas

Quote it right

Low-price bid may sound tempting, but in the end as you go along the path of home renovation, you will realize it might turn out to be a pricy deal. If the existing plumbing problems are not fixed by low-cost plumber, you will have to be prepared to pay more for complicated renovation situations.

After all, there is also the factor of time to consider. If plumbing takes two or more revisions and much efforts are wasted in focusing on just one aspect of renovation, you will end up not being able to perfect other equally essential elements of grand house renovation.

Kevin Szabo Jr Plumbing was featured in Palos Park Life magazine January 2016.

Interview by Carli Keling.

In need of a fast, reliable plumber you can trust? Look no further than Kevin Szabo Jr. Plumbing and Sewer (KSP). Following in the footsteps of his Grandfather and Father, owner Kevin Szabo Jr. is proud to be a 3rd generation plumbing company business owner who takes pride in his repeat customer base.

“I knew I was going to be a plumber at an early age,” Kevin said. “I worked with my father all through high school and continued working with him until I opened my own business.”

Kevin and his team have been serving the south suburbs in the Chicagoland area for 10 years. Kevin currently has 12 employees and 8 trucks on the road doing plumbing work.

“Each of our employees brings a little to the table as everyone specializes in different things,” Kevin said. “Each person has their own special value they bring to the company.”

With over 17 years of hands-on experience and expertise, it’s easy to understand why customers remain loyal to KSP.

“We had Kevin Szabo Plumbing out to our home to rod out our bathroom sink and fix a faucet that needed a new cartridge. Dan was the plumber and he fixed everything quickly and so professionally. THANK YOU for your prompt service, too. We will definitely use your company whenever we need a plumber again!” Gail, Facebook review.

KSP’s mission is simple: to do good work for good people. Kevin and his team take pride in building lifelong relationships with their customers. Customer service is always a top priority and Kevin stresses the importance of treating customers like family.

“We want to make you and keep you happy,” Kevin said. “The best advice I ever got from my dad was ‘do a good job and make sure you leave behind a sticker and a magnet!’ When people hear the ‘Szabo’ name, they always think plumbing; we want there to be a positive association with it.”

KSP has a long list of services and repair options available including everything from water heaters, sump pumps, garbage disposals and kitchen appliances to toilets, faucets, sewer replacement, emergency services, frozen pipe repair, kitchen and bath remodel and more.

Kevin’s business was originally founded on 24 hour emergency plumbing services. Now, one of Kevin’s favorite parts of the business is getting creative in bathroom and kitchen remodeling and design.

“I enjoy being able to make decisions to create the perfect bathroom or kitchen for my customers,” Kevin said. “Our attention to detail is what puts us with the best of the best. We want our customers happy and satisfied the first time around.”

Kevin lives in Tinley Park with his wife, Rona, 18 month old son, Jack and furry friend Tickles, the family Chihuahua. Rona owns a marketing company and takes care of the marketing needs at KSP. The family enjoys going out to dinner, cooking together and spending time at home with Jack. Kevin and Rona love the fact that Jack already seems interested in the family business.

“Jack loves to put on daddy’s boots, walk to the door and say bye-bye!” Rona said. “He already wants to go to work with daddy. Jack will get up on the kitchen stool with a pen and paper and take messages on his phone.”

Kevin and Rona also make an effort to stay involved with local charities and participate in charitable events in the surrounding villages. The family recently volunteered at St. Chris for the Thanksgiving Holiday and participate in cancer and lupus walks every year.

When looking for a plumber, Kevin urges customers to make well-educated decisions.

“I always suggest looking at online reviews before choosing a plumber,” Kevin said. “It’s also important that the plumber you choose is a licensed plumber. A lot of remodelers don’t use a licensed plumber so I urge rehabbers and tilers to make sure the plumbing is done by a professional so that it doesn’t ruin your new remodel job.”

Kevin and his team stand behind the work they do and feel privileged to serve the communities they work in.

“We are reliable, honest, and hardworking and we take pride in our same day service,”

Kevin said. “I love what I do and who I work with. Our community and customer base is very loyal and I think it’s because we do good work for good people. It’s a pleasure doing work for them.”
